Trimethylolpropane (TMP, IUPAC name 2-(hydroxymethyl)-2-ethylpropane-1,3-diol) and its ethoxylated derivatives are extensively used as precursors for urethanes and polyester resins.

CWB Technology

CWB process uses a special heterogeneous catalyst to catalyze the cross-aldol reaction between formaldehyde and n-butyraldehyde to give intermediate 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)butanal (DMB) and then carry out catalytic hydrogenation on DMB to produce high purity Trimethylolpropane (TMP).

Process Highlights:

  • CWB patented process.
  • Aldol reaction
    • Special and highly selective heterogeneous catalyst will be used to drive the aldol reaction between formaldehyde and n-butyraldehyde.
      • High selectivity to TMP without producing formate salt by-products.
      • Optimised feed ratio of formaldehyde/n-butyraldehyde to minimise by-product production.
    • Low formaldehyde consumption
    • Effective formaldehyde recovery
      • Losses of formaldehyde due to conversion to methanol in the hydrogenation reaction can be reduced.
    • No tedious catalyst separation step will be involved after aldol reaction.
  • Hydrogenation reaction
    • A highly selective, low cost, Cr-free based hydrogenation catalyst will be used to give the best hydrogenation performance of DMB to TMP, without sacrificing the reaction yield.
    • Replace energy intensive distillation with crystallisation as the TMP purification method.

Economics:

  • More competitive formaldehyde and n-butyraldehyde consumption than other existing processes.
  • Lower formaldehyde consumption leads to a lower waste water production.
  • High cost for chromium waste treatment will be eliminated.
  • The entire technology is expected to be highly scaleable. Suitable for either small scale or industrial scale of production.
  • Energy consumption through heat integration and optimised purification process (cyrtsllization) will be reduced.

Safety and Environment:

  • Cr-free hydrogenation catalyst is used, no chromium wastes will be produced.
  • Overall side reactions are minimised and less valuable materials will be lost from purging.
